The Clearwater Osteoarthritis Study
The Clearwater Osteoarthritis Study was a landmark epidemiological study of 5,000 residents of Clearwater, FL. Participants were followed over a 25 year period. During this time, over 437,500 X-rays and medical exams were administered and over 12,500,000 data points were collected, adding greatly to the available information on this highly prevalent disease.
In partnership with the University of South Florida College of Public Health, 14 papers were published in peer-reviewed medical journals.
Does Diabetes hide osteoarthritis pain?
Clinical practice and research efforts related to the highly prevalent and disabling disease, osteoarthritis (OA), have long been hampered by an inadequate case definition. Much of the difficulty is due to a lack of agreement between X-rays evidence of OA and a patient’s report of pain at that site.

Site specific osteoarthritis and the index to ring finger length ratio
The type 3 finger length pattern is associated, to a statistically significant degree, with OA of the knee. The type 3 finger length pattern (ring finger longer than index finger) appears to be an indicator of OA predisposition.

Arthritis and Wellness Institute
The Aging and Wellness Institute opened its doors in 2015. Staffed by Registered Dietician/Nutritionists, Certified Exercise Leaders, Nurse Practitioners and Public Health Professionals, AWI served a collective 250 members, provided over 5000 classes, and partnered with over 30 local agencies on variety of community projects. The organization took comprehensive senior wellness to a new level, and nourished the community and social connections that came with it. Community members participated in group exercise, yoga, cooking and nutrition classes, as well as myriad social programming.
AWI had several programs designed to keep participants independent and living at home. AWI was a licensed facility for the award-winning A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls.
Sadly, the COVID-19 pandemic forced closure of this popular program. We look forward to a time when the doors can open to the community once again.
